Windy's Reno Rescue

Chris - aka Windy - is a larger-than-life husband, father, brother, mate and talented muso. In August 2020 Chris was diagnosed with Young Onset Alzheimer’s. With the condition already beginning to affect his memory, speech, mobility and ability to plan and organise, doing simple every day activities such as getting up stairs, stepping into the shower and climbing off the couch were becoming tricky missions, even with a walking stick and good plan of attack. Because of his condition, Chris lost his job and this hit his family’s financial situation hard. It took 8 months to get a diagnosis and for income protection payments to kick in. The impact of many months loss of income meant they were on the back foot. NDIS funding for home improvements was limited and took time. Relatives of Chris stepped in and set up a GoFundMe campaign to assist Chris and his family financially with the renovations needed to adapt his home for what lies ahead. The campaign was strongly supported by Chris’s friends, relatives and the 2 church communities he calls home: Wallsend Seventh-day Adventist Church and Gateway Seventh-day Adventist Church. As well as contributing financially, Chris’s friends, family and church community members, along with a number of local businesses, assisted with renovating Chris’s home, turning the garage into a wheel-chair friendly bedroom and ensuite, removing some walls to create an open-plan kitchen and living room and more. The below video shows some before and after photos and footage of this project. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in any way as a part of this project to make a positive difference in the lives of Chris and his family.
